Our History

Alpha Omicron Pi was founded on January 2, 1897 at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City by four extraordinary women: Jessie Wallace Hughan, Elizabeth Heywood Wyman, Stella George Stern Perry, and Helen St. Clair Mullan. The first National President, Stella George Stern Perry, wrote, "we founded AOII to continue the friendships we made in college throughout our lifetimes."

AOII became a National Fraternity in 1898 with the founding of the Pi Chapter at Sophie Newcomb College, Tulane University in New Orleans. We became an international organization in 1930 with the founding of the first Canadian chapter, Beta Tau, at the University of Toronto. In 1989, AOII Headquarters was dedicated in Brentwood, TN, near Nashville.

Iota originated as girl's club, named Delta Omicron, here at the University of Illinois.  They were a social organization, but as time went by they felt their organization was serving no real purpose. As sororities were rapidly making their appearance on campus, they felt their club would be meaningful if they affiliated with a national sorority. They choose Alpha Omicron Pi, which then had only been in existence a little over ten years. On February 27, 1911, Delta Omicron officially became Iota Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi, their fifteenth collegiate chapter.  Our first chapter house was originally on Main Street until the chapter house at 706 South Mathews Street was completed in 1927.  This beautiful house was built specifically for our sorority. In 1985, seeing that our chapter had grown, an addition was added onto the Mathews Street house. Iota currently has 145 members with 61 members living in the house.
